Bomb Threat

  • If you observe a suspicious object or package on campus, DO NOT HANDLE IT!!! Clear the area and immediately and contact Public Safety at extension 6888 or 6911.
  • If you receive a bomb threat over the telephone ask the caller the following questions:
A. When is the bomb going to explode?
B. Where is the bomb located?
C. What kind of bomb is it?
D. What does it look like?
E. Why did you place the bomb?
  • Keep talking to the caller as long as possible and record the following information:
A. Time of call. 
B. Sex of caller. 
C. Age of caller if able to determine. 
D. Speech pattern, possible nationality, etc.
E. Emotional state of caller. 
F. Background noise.
  • After you have gathered the information above, notify Public Safety immediately at extension 6888 or 6911.
  • Complete the Bomb Threat Report Form and submit it to Public Safety.
  • Public Safety officers along with the New York City Police Department, when necessary, will conduct a detailed bomb search of the building.
  • If an emergency exists, the building’s fire alarm system will be activated.
  • When the fire alarm is sounded, leave the building immediately by using the nearest marked exit and alert others to do the same.
  • Assist disabled persons in exiting the building! DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS DURING A FIRE!
  • If you cannot help a disabled person exit the building attempt to bring them to the nearest stairwell in the building. Have them wait on the landing. Stairwells are checked first by the fire department and are constructed to provide a higher degree of protection. Immediately notify public safety or the fire department if a disabled person is waiting on a stairwell landing or other safe area.
  • Once outside, move to a clear area as far away from the affected building as possible. Streets, fire lanes, fire hydrants, and walkways should be kept clear for emergency vehicles and crews.
  • A Field Emergency Command Post may be set up near the emergency site. Please stay clear of the command post.
  • DO NOT RE-ENTER an evacuated building unless you are told to do so by a College officials or emergency service personnel.

Bomb Threat: Identifying Suspicious Items

  • Look closely around work area when you arrive for work. This will help you if you are called on to identify unusual or suspicious items later.
  • Report potential safety or security problems to the Public Safety Department at extension 6888 or 6911.
  • If asked to assist in a search for a bomb:
  • Be thorough.
  • DO NOT USE 2-way RADIOS.
  • Do not touch anything you suspect to be a-bomb or unusual package.
  • If necessary move people away from the suspicious item.
  • Look for anything and everything that might conceal a bomb.
  • Keep those around you calm.
  • Follow the instructions of Public Safety and NYPD personnel.

What does a suspicious letter or package look like? 

  • Protruding Wires
  • No return address
  • Addressed to title only or incorrect title
  • Lopsided or uneven address information
  • Misspellings of common words in your name or address
  • Badly typed or written information
  • Strange odor
  • Excessive tape or string
  • Oily stains
  • Rigid or bulky

What should you do if you receive suspicious mail and/or package?

  • Do not shake or empty the contents of any suspicious envelope or package.
  • Do not smell or taste the contents.
  • Cover the envelope or package with anything (e.g. paper, trash can, etc.) and DO NOT REMOVE this cover.
  • Turn off any portable fans, which might be in the area.
  • Leave the room and close the door, or section from the main area to prevent others from entering.
  • Wash you hands with soap and water to prevent spreading any harmful substance to your face.
  • Contact the Public Safety Office
  • Make a list of all of the people who were in the area when the letter or package arrived and give this information to the Public Safety Department.
