Your Guide to Hostos Intramurals

The Hostos Intramural Program is designed to provide an opportunity for experiential learning for the entire student body through participation in organized activities. We strive to encourage lifelong recreation skills, to integrate participants socially in an athletic setting, and to promote sportsmanship and fair play among the students participating in these activities. To reach our goal, Hostos offers a variety of sports to choose from.

Anyone is allowed to play and there is no cost to have a team. Intramurals is a way to relieve stress acquired from hours of studying and planning of events. It is also a great way for students to get to know each other on a personal level. If meetings are usually pretty formal then there isn't much time to tell jokes or stories. The objective of intramurals is to simply have fun.

The great thing about intramurals is that the score doesn't matter. As long as people can have a positive attitude, everything will go smoothly. Being involved in intramurals helps create a well rounded atmosphere that will make people want to keep coming back. Business gets done, community service is provided, and members make new friends and enjoy each other's company.

There are prizes that will be given away to the championship teams and individuals, and, in that case, students may get competitive. The important thing to remember is that everybody is competing in intramurals because they want to have fun, and winning is not everything. The objective of any person joining intramurals should be to have fun, make new friends, and learn team concepts and sportsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Intramural Sports?
Intramural are competitive, yet fun individual and team sports. Hostos Community College currently offers nine intramural sports, including Indoor-Flag Football, Handball, Dodgeball, 3-on-3 Basketball Tournaments, Indoor-Soccer, and Table Tennis. Teams compete against other teams within the Hostos community.

Is there a cost? Where do I sign up?
There is no cost to compete in intramurals at Hostos Community College. Those interested in signing up for a specific sport should come to the Athletic Director’s office located at the GYM of the C Building in room 382 or call (718) 518-6789 for more information.

Who can play Intramural Sports?
Any individual that has a Hostos student and has a valid Hostos ID can compete. You must present prior to each contest.

Do I need a team to play?
If you do not already have a team, it doesn't mean you have to miss out. If you sign up before a sport gets filled, you will be placed on a team. This is a great way to meet new friends!

Can I sign up for more than just one intramural activity?
An individual can compete in as many intramural sports as desired per semester.

How long does the season last?
Each intramural sport has its own schedule, and each team or individual (depending on if it is an individual sport such as handball, table tennis, etc.) will be assigned a time in which their game will be played.

How does the playoff system work?
For team sports, every team is guaranteed a playoff spot, as the teams will be seeded according to their place in the standings. For individual sports, each competitor is guaranteed a playoff spot as well, and the playoffs take on the same protocol as in team sports. Giving each intramural team/competitor a chance to compete in the playoffs gives students the motivation to play the whole season and compete for a prize following the regular season.

What Do I get for competing?
Every person that participates for the entire season, including the playoffs, will receive a bag and t-shirt courtesy of Hostos Community College Athletic Department. In addition, all teams and individuals who win a championship will take home a complementary championship medallion!

Where are the games played?
All Intramurals are played at the Athletics and Sports Recreation Center on campus. For more information as to where your sport will play its games, please keep it posted to www.hostos.cuny.edu/sdem/athletics.html or call the Athletic Director’s office at 718-518-6564.
