What is Hostos' freshman admission criteria?

Want to know what the New STARS Center can do for you? Read on to learn a little bit about the many ways we can assist you as you embark on this new and exciting journey at Hostos Community College.

  1. Academic Advisement
First semester freshmen students may seek on-going advisement from professionals and peer advisors in the New STARS Center.  If you need general information about academic issues, or have other college-related questions you may drop by or make an appointment to meet with an advisor. Toward the end of the first semester, new students will be assigned to faculty advisors in their academic departments to be advised in their major for the up-coming semester.

  2. Academic Success Programs
The New STARS advisors offer a range of academic success workshops throughout the academic year.  These workshops are designed to help students develop the skills they need to become successful students and maximize their time on campus in order to get the grades that will help them achieve their goals. To participate, contact the New STARS Center and obtain a schedule of workshops offered for the upcoming semester.

The New STARS Center also manages a variety of initiatives that are designed to provide support to students who are academically at risk. Through early warning and incomplete grade interventions, academic success workshops, referrals to college support services and student-centered activities, the New STARS Center helps students maintain good academic standing, remain in school, and make significant progress toward graduation.

  3. Evening and Weekend Services
The Coordinator of Evening and Weekend Services offers all of the support services that day students access during peak hours in a format and time-frame that meets the needs of the many students who are on campus during off-peak hours.  Students are encouraged to drop by the Admissions Satellite Center (B-Building, 1st Floor) to ask questions and let us know what services you would like us to provide.

  4. New Student Development
First semester and new transfer students are strongly encouraged to come in and meet with one of the dedicated professionals in the New STARS Center. Students who visit will be greeted by individuals who are dedicated to offering prompt, courteous and respectful support services. Ongoing and meaningful interactions with trained STARS staff will result in the development of skills necessary for academic success. The staff will also help students connect with and seek academic advisement from faculty.

  5. Incomplete Grade (INC) Initiative
In line with the Hostos policy on grades and academic standards, students who are given a grade of INC must to be sure to complete any and all outstanding requirements by an established deadline date the subsequent semester. The New STARS Center will alert students of outstanding INC grades though a reminder letter as well as coordinate referral of students to academic departments or individual faculty members.

  6. Academically at Risk New Students
The New STARS Center develops targeted Workshops for students identified as At Risk via the early warning system and other avenues. STARS Staff will meet with At Risk students individually and work with them to design Individualized Academic Improvement Contracts. The Center collaborates with other SDEM Units to coordinate probationary student interventions.  In addition, the New STARS advisors provide academic advisement and support to first year or readmitted students on academic probation.
