Teatro Stage Fest presents Borinquen June 6, 7, and 8, 2 & 7PM Hostos Community College is very proud that TeatroStageFest, a Latino International Theater Festival of New York, has invited the Hostos Repertory Theater’s production of “Borinquen vive en El Barrio” which received six ACE (Asociacion de Cronistas de Espectaculo) awards to perform at the second Iberoamerican theater festival to be held from June 2-15, 2008. TeatroStageFest is a ground-breaking cultural, artistic, and educational celebration that features great theater from New York, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain. “Borinquen Vive en El Barrio” will be featured along with 4-5 more local theater productions and 3 international shows coming from the Caribbean, Latin America, and Spain. This is the first time a CUNY College has been invited to participate in this prestigious festival. The performances will be on June 6th, 7th, and 8th, to coincide with the Puerto Rican Day Parade. “Borinquen Vive en El Barrio” is the story of a Puerto Rican family that has lived in the United States for the past fifty years. Borinquen, the protagonist, lives in East Harlem. Her daughter Minerva, who is married to a Jewish American, now lives in the suburbs of Connecticut. The play opens when Borinquen is visited by a young relative from Puerto Rico, her grand-niece Maite, who comes to study acting at NYU. Throughout Maite’s stay, the two women develop a close relationship where Borinquen remembers her past in Puerto Rico, and Maite learns about the lives and struggles of so many Puerto Ricans in New York. Minerva, who comes occasionally to check on her mother, shows us why she chose to leave El Barrio and assimilate as an American. Carlos, Borinquen’s neighbor and a long-time family friend, has been in love with Minerva since childhood, and resents her marriage to a non-Puerto Rican. Through these two characters we learn about the Young Lords and the identity struggles of many U.S.-born Puerto Ricans. When suddenly Borinquen faces death, all characters are forced to re-examine their relationships with their families, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Sponsor: Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture Admission: $15.00
