Modern Languages Awards
 
Citation of Proficiency 
 
A citation of proficiency in Spanish will be presented to students who have completed the following courses with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish:
 
Beginning Intermediate Proficiency: Completion of Spanish 121 and 122 with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish.
 
Intermediate Proficiency: Completion of Spanish 121 and 222 with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish.
 
Advanced Proficiency: Completion of two electives, at the 300 level, with a 3.0 GPA in Spanish.
 
CITATIONS IN PROFICIENCY are very useful for students seeking employment because it will demonstrate to prospective employers a measurable level of second-language proficiency and it can enhance employment opportunities.

 
Sigma Delta Mu (SDM) (National Honor Society)
 
                                                                
 
 
Sigma Delta Mu is a national honor society for students studying Spanish during the first two-years of college. Founded in 1979, the society offers the advantages of an enriched program in Spanish and provides a way to reward language learners in the initial stages of their study. Its goals are to promote excellence in the study of Spanish and literature and cultures of Spanish-speaking people. The Chapter Epsilon of SDM was created at Hostos Community College in May, 2005. Students who qualify for active membership should have a 3.0 GPA overall and 3.5 GPA or higher in Spanish courses.
 
Visual and Performing Arts Awards
 
The Jose Nieto-Iglesias Medal
 
The Jose Nieto-Iglesias Medal, posthumous homage to Dr. Jose Nieto-Iglesias, distinguished early member of the Visual and Performing Arts Department is presented for outstanding academic achievement in the arts to a student who earned 12 credits or more in Visual and Performing Arts courses and a cumulative index of 3.2 or more.
