Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), a type of virtual exchange, is a technology-facilitated pedagogy that provides students the opportunity to interact and collaborate, both synchronously and asynchronously, with peers from another culture while engaging in disciplinary-focused work. Faculty at institutions, located in different parts of the world, collaborate to create a set of learning outcomes and learning activities, which students undertake collaboratively in a multicultural setting. Through interaction, collaboration and reflection, students obtain 21st century career competencies.
