Under the leadership of Vice President and Provost Shiang-Kwei Wang, the recipients of the 2024 Teaching Excellence Awards were recognized on May 22, 2024 in the Hostos Research Center. This marks the first Teaching Excellence Award at Hostos. Also rewarded and recognized were active and retired faculty with 25 plus years of service to the college. Professor Clarence H. Robertson
Lecturer, English Department
Prof. Clarence H. Robertson was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but spent most of his formative years in McComb, Mississippi. At age 16, he moved to Inglewood, California, where he graduated from high school and then attended El Camino Community College before transferring to the University of Santa Cruz, California. After graduating, he pursued his doctoral studies at The Graduate School and University Center of the City University New York. He now resides in Brooklyn, has been happily married for 23 years and has taught at Hostos Community College as an adjunct and then a lecturer since 2010.
Professor Srecko Mavrek
Adjunct Lecturer, Education Department
Srecko Mavrek is currently a PE & swimming teacher at KAPPA International High School and an adjunct lecturer at Hostos Community College. As a Croatian immigrant, he previously worked as a researcher and lecturer at the Universities of Udine in Italy, Karl-Franz-University Graz in Austria, Augsburg University in Germany, and Pecs University in Hungary before coming to the US in 2005. He currently serves as a member of SHAPE America's Physical Education Council, as well as a reviewer for the peer-reviewed journal Strategies – A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators. He also served as the official representative of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education at the UN Department for Global Communications. He received several prestigious professional awards, including the 2016 President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition Community Leadership Award, the 2015 SHAPE America Eastern District High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year Award, and the 2012 National Service Award (Council for Aquatic Professionals, AAPAR/American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance). He has presented 100+ oral and poster presentations, workshops and invited lectures at local, state, national and international conferences and seminars in 15 countries.
