Sarah Hoiland, Associate Professor of Socia Sciences
Award
Sarah Hoiland, Associate Professor of Social Sciences in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department was awarded the Making Opportunities for Mothers in Academia University/Institution Award at this year's International Association of Maternal Action + Scholarship (IAMAS) Conference this June in Boston. She will be accepting the award with four HOPE alumna, Lordina Asante, Leyla Caballero, Kimberly Febles, and Nephertiti Morris, and the HOPE program assistant (Hostos nursing student/RN candidate) Erika Francis, in Boston, and on behalf of Hostos Community College and her co-PIs Professors Biao Jiang, JungHang Lee, and Norberto Hernandez Valdes-Portela. Additionally, the group will present as a panel and Professor Hoiland will participate in a roundtable discussion of award winners.

Rosario, L. (2024). Community College Engineering Pathways Grant [Grant awarded by ASME - The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Community College Engineering Pathways Grant]. Hostos Community College.
This funding aims to assist underserved community college and Career and Technical Education (CTE) students in successfully finishing their degrees. The goal is to help them enter the technical workforce or move on to four-year institutions for additional study in mechanical engineering or related fields. This grant aims to address equity gaps in postsecondary education and improve access to high-paying engineering careers. The Community College Engineering Pathways program will offer specialized training, internships, and apprenticeships, while also helping colleges enhance employer networks and curriculum alignment.

New York State Smart Scholars Early College program
Awarded: March 1, 2024-August 31, 2028
The Hostos Office of School-College Partnerships, in collaboration with Mott Haven Village Prep high school (MHVP) won a SmartScholars grant from New York State Education Department (NYSED) to create an early college cohort for the high school, partnered with Media Design at Hostos. This 5-year, $825,00 grant serves a cohort of students in each year at MHVP to take courses in alignment with Media Design. Each year, 25 students will join the Early College cohort in 9th grade. As students progress through high school, they will have access to college level media design coursework at Hostos. The summer before 9th grade, early college candidates will attend a summer institute at MHVP and Hostos.
