Interim Dean for Continuing Education and Workforce Development

As the Interim Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce development at Hostos Community College, Peter has been instrumental in developing a flourishing Division with industry-based certificate programs. With a proven record of accomplishments, a strong mix of communication, organization and management skills, Peter formulates and executes policies and programs, as well as carries out a broad range of managerial and fiscal responsibilities.

Under Peter’s management, the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development offers these services: Adult learning Center, The Allied Health Career Pipeline Program, Career Services Resources, Center for Bronx Non Profits, CUNY Fatherhood Academy, CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP), CUNY Start, Liberty Partnerships and Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA). Peter also oversees the college’s satellite programs and serves as College liaison with CUNY’s Continuing Education and Workforce Programs, and other CUNY programs.

In his current position of Interim Dean, Peter generates and manages innovative educational credit and non-credit programs for adults in response to the changing needs of constituencies. Peter continuously expands workforce partnerships and collaborations with business, unions, community-based organizations, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations. While overseeing start up and operational budgets, implementing short and long range fiscal plans, determining allocation of funds for staff, supplies, facilities and equipment, authorizing and monitoring expenditures, Peter develops and implements the division’s strategic plans. Additionally, he writes proposals for Continuing Education and Workforce Development initiatives and creates alliances for funding through strategic partnerships.

Interim Dean Peter Mertens is a graduate of New York University with a degree in Journalism and Urban Studies. Peter serves as the Fort Lee Academy of Finance Advisory Board Chair. Peter is the proud parent of a current CUNY student.
