Student Orientation

Welcome to Hostos Community College!

As a new student, you must fulfill several requirements from various student service offices before you can enroll in classes at HCC. This page will guide you through the various actions you must take to complete requirements by the necessary deadlines to help avoid delays and penalties. A step by step checklist to ensure a smooth enrollment and transition to HCC can be found below.

Orientation is a great opportunity to learn about life as a Caiman student. You will become familiar with campus resources, get the tools you need to begin your journey at Hostos and be able to register for courses on the same day. You will also learn about academic and student involvement opportunities, become familiar with our campus culture and meet your advisors. There are two types of orientations, New Student (incoming freshmen) and Transfer Student (incoming transfers)

Why is orientation important? We have programs that are tailored to all of our new students and have developed a comprehensive onboarding program to help you transition to HCC. Our goal is to make sure that your academic journey is successful, and you get the support you need. Your journey begins at orientation!

Virtual Student Orientation 2020

We continue to be committed to protecting the health and safety of our campus, our community and beyond. With this in mind, New and Transfer Student Orientation are now open and will be conducted virtually. An invite will be sent to your email- the earlier your register for orientation, the better your class schedule will be!

The virtual student orientation is an opportunity to connect with your future classmates, prepare for academic and non-academic life, and learn to navigate campus prior to arriving for your Fall classes. These virtual sessions serve as an introduction to the college and will help you navigate your way once classes start.
Quick Facts:
  • Students must register and attend New/Transfer Student Orientation in order to enroll for classes at HCC.
  • Students who miss their Orientation appointment may schedule a one-on-one registration appointment with a Coach, but must reach out to and inform the staff that they missed Orientation.
  • When a student registers for Orientation, a confirmation email will be sent to the provided email address with the orientation link to our live virtual session.
  • During Orientation, students will learn how to contact campus resources including: Admissions, Financial Aid, The Counseling Center, the Center for Student Accessibility, and the Library to name a few.

Important Steps to Prepare for Orientation

We're here to help you succeed.  Part of being a successful college student is learning how to navigate the College's rules, regulations and deadlines.
Step 1: Complete Immunization Paperwork
The New York State Public Health Law 2165 and 2167, and Title 10 New York Codes, Rules and Regulations Subpart 66-2 (10 NYCRR Subpart 66-2) mandates that all incoming students born after December 31, 1956, must be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) before registering for classes.  For more details and forms go to our immunization health page

Step 2: Activate your Hostos Email Account
Your Hostos email is the main way for HCC to communicate with you, send alerts about your bill and other crucial information to help with your transition to HCC. Please start checking this email on a daily basis for lots of useful information!

Step 3: Activate your CUNY Account
CUNYFirst is your secure and private one-stop access to all your CUNY records. You can securely view private information such as financial aid information, register for courses, access BlackBoard and learn about services and benefits offered through CUNY. Write down or save this information somewhere safe, you will need it at Orientation!

Step 4: Review and pay your bill
Your tuition due date is based on the date you initially registered for classes. You will receive an alert at your Hostos email address telling you when your bill is available.

Step 5: Come to class
August 26, 2020 is the first day of classes and the last day of registration.

Please take a look at our Academic Calendar to see some important dates for our upcoming semester.
