WEEK 15

Welcome to week 15! Congratulate yourself on a job well done this term, and best of luck on your final papers, projects and final exams.   

Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Fall 2022 Final Exams – Review the finals examinations schedule to confirm an exam’s date and time. Please contact your professor if you have a concern or inquiry about the final exam information listed. Note: ESL Department exams are scheduled for December 14. 
  • Wednesday, December 14 – This is the last day of weekday classes and course withdrawal with a “W” grade and deadline to complete INC grade for Winter/Spring 2022 term. 
  • Check out your Final Grades on CUNYfirst – Term grades are due by December 28 and can be viewed via CUNYfirst –> Student Center –> Academic records. 

Congrats you made it through the Fall 2022 Semester! Have a Wonderful Holiday!

WEEK 14

Welcome to week 14! There are still plenty of activities to participate in before the semester ends. Keep in mind important dates and take part in the various campus community events being held this week.

Here are the Caiman Clues:

  • Don’t let F’s or WU’s Happen to You – If you have not been attending class or doing any of your work, or if you do not plan on finishing a particular class, it can seriously impact your GPA and financial aid. If you think you may get a WU or F grade, please contact your Academic Advisor/Success Coach. The deadline to withdraw is Wednesday, December 14.  
  • Commemorate the Holiday Season – Join us in the C-Building lobby at 1:30 p.m. on December 8 for Hostos’ Annual Tree Lighting Celebration. All students, faculty and staff are invited.
  • Fall 2022 LLAC Student Conference – On Wednesday, December 7, join us in the FDR Room (C-312) from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. for a free lunch and coffee with students sharing their experiences in Latinx, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies! The event is open to all the Hostos community.

WEEK 13

As you prepare to wrap up the fall semester, the next few days require your unrelentless drive and determination to finish up your coursework and get ready for finals! With this in mind, we want to share these clues with you: 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Flash Tutoring – Need an immediate review of your writing assignments? The Writing Center, located in C-596, has drop-in opportunities daily Monday – Thursday. Contact them at 718-518-6678 
  • Getting Prepped for Finals – In order to have greater success on your final exams, we encourage students to schedule tutoring hours with the Hostos Academic Learning Center. Research Librarians are also available for one-on-one sessions to support your progress in your research projects. To schedule a meeting, complete this interest form. 
  • Registration for Winter 2023 Workshop is now open! – Complete your developmental math or/and writing requirements and save time and money. Sign up for a FREE winter workshop using your CUNYfirst schedule builder. MA 10, MA20, and/or EN 93 Workshops will be offered in-person and online. Click here for more details. 
  • Transfer Services OfficeVisit the Transfer Services Office for college catalogs, applications, reference books, and information for four-year institutions. Complete this interest form to set up an appointment or attend their Walk-in Wednesday in the D-Building, Room 101.

WEEK 12

Congratulations on making it to Week 12! You've kept up momentum, consistently participating in class, studying hard, and handing in assignments. For the remaining weeks of the semester, it’s important to remain on-track and work towards crossing the finish line. You’re almost there! 

  • INC Grade – If you were granted an extension to hand in work towards the successful completion of a Spring/Summer 2022 course, the deadline is December 13. Contact your instructor today and plan out the remaining items to submit for the course's completion.  
  • Fall 2022 Financial Aid – A Bursar's hold on CUNYfirst will stop you from registering. If you have questions about your financial aid or tuition bill, schedule an appointment with the Financial Aid Office or e-mail the Bursars Office before December 10.  
  • Spring 2023 Registration Being a college student is also about preparing yourself for the future! Check your Degree Works plan and Schedule Builder — the tools you need to register for your next semester classes.  
  • TODAY’S EVENTS – Getting To Know Your Resources: A conversation with advisors (Register here). Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills: How to impress your employer with your stories (Register here). 
  • 2023 LLAC Mentored Student Cohort The Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Studies cohort program at Hostos is accepting applications until November 20. Participants will receive mentorship in LAC studies, a financial incentive of $1,000, and transfer opportunities to CUNY senior colleges.

WEEK 11

We hope you were able to go out and vote yesterday! November is a month full of action and special programs at Hostos. Don’t miss this week’s clues!   

  • The Perfect Hire Join us for Resume Writing & Personal Statements workshops on November 15 at 1 p.m. (register here) or November 16 at 1 p.m. (register here), and Interview Skills workshops on November 15 at 5 p.m. (register here) or November 16 at 5 p.m. (register here)
  • Study Spaces (HALC, Writing Center, Library, Student Computing Center)The computer lab has multiple stations and well-trained staff is always available during the open hours to guide students with technological resources and support questions in the East Academic Building room C-595. 
  • Hostos Honors Program – Each semester students with a GPA of 3.2 and above may enroll in an honors course to receive mentorship, engage in community service and enjoy participant benefits.  To learn more about being a Hostos honor’s student, go here
  • Hostos Science Week - Starting November 15, join the Natural Science Department's celebration on the importance of science used in the daily life of the people. Get more information here.

WEEK 10

Happy November! There is lots happening in these upcoming weeks. Remember to apply for graduation, vote, visit the food pantry, and meet with Hostos alumni to learn more about career paths.  

  • Attention, fall graduates! The last day to apply for Graduation is Friday, November 4. 
  • Alumni Career Talk Week: Join us on the week of November 7-11 for an interactive chat week with Alumni regarding their career journeys. Learn how they started at Hostos, their challenges and accomplishments, and where they are now. Register here. 
  • Election Day is November 8 Early voting takes place October 29-November 6 at specific locations listed here.  More information on how to vote can be found in the Hostos Library guide. 
  • Hostos Food Pantry If you are dealing with food insecurity, don’t wait to schedule an appointment with the One Stop Office by contacting Madeline Cruz at 718-518-4141 or email mcruz@hostos.cuny.edu.

WEEK 8

Congratulations, you’ve passed the halfway point of the semester. Take a second to give yourself some credit and a pat on the back for how hard you’ve worked thus far! 

  • Tips to Thriving – Join the Student Leadership Academy’s Speak-Up workshop, “How to Combat Burnout, Stay Motivated, and Communicate Your Needs Directly,” with guest speaker Lawrese Brown via Zoom on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Register here. 
  • Career Services opportunities Check out Career Services’ STEM Resume writing workshop on October 20 from 2 to 3 p.m.; Launching Your Career: Accounting and Business (part 2) on October 21 at 3:30 p.m. (register here); and learn how to access the Hire Caimans in the Simplicity 101 Workshop [register here] via Zoom on October 19 at 3:30 p.m. 
  • On-Campus Activities – Combat stress with some Salsa dancing on Wednesdays and relaxing yoga on Thursdays, both from 2 to 3 p.m., in studio C-152.
  • Festive Break – Today, October 19, is the last day to register for the BX Halloween Parade! Email Dean Johanna Gomez at jgomez@hostos.cuny.edu by 5 p.m. to participate.

WEEK 7

It’s that time of the semester again. Enrollment will be opening soon and we want to make sure you’re prepared and ready!   
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Mid-Semester Check-In Meet with your professors during their office hours to discuss your progress in class, future projects, and challenges. You can also schedule a meeting with your Academic Advisor or Success Coach on Succeed@Hostos to discuss your goals and plans to succeed this semester. 
  • Enrollment is Opening! Get ready to enroll for next semester! Enrollment for the Winter and Spring 2023 semester opens October 24! Check your Degree Plan via DegreeWorks for your list of recommended courses for next semester. 
  • Graduating students For those who are completing your degree requirements at the end of the fall 2022 semester, don’t forget to apply for graduation. The deadline to apply for graduation is November 4, 2022. If you need additional assistance, contact the Graduation Audit Unit by email: graduationaudit@hostos.cuny.edu or by phone: 718-518-6771. 
  • Articulation Agreement  On Friday October 21, the STEM, & Dual Degree Programs in collaboration with academic departments will host a ZOOM conversation with Vaughn College about all transfer options available to students. WEEK 6

October is here! This week’s clues include some important dates for you to know. And don’t forget to check in with tutors and yourself to make sure you’re on track for a successful semester.  
  • Earn a higher grade in your class! Tutors are available in the HALC and Writing Center (C-596) to assist you with your study skills. Stop by the C Building lobby to ask a question from a Writing Center Tutor without an appointment every Tuesday between 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Science study skills workshop on Oct. 7 from 1-2 pm via zoom ( join here). 
  • Taking care of yourself - Stress reduction and mindfulness practice on Oct 5, 3 p.m. Register here. Also, improve your mental productivity with Mindful Coloring on the Go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the A-Atrium, Oct.11-13. 
  • No Classes on Monday - The College will be closed on Monday, October 10 for a federal holiday. Review the Academic Calendar for important dates and deadlines. 
  • Schedule Builder Workshop - Join a tutorial on October 14 at 1 p.m. to learn how to use the CUNY registration tool so that you can independently create your Winter/Spring 2023 class schedule. Access event here .  Zoom Meeting ID: 85479805867

WEEK 5

We are a third of the way through the Fall 2022 semester — that happened fast! The clues this week focus on financial support, available scholarships, and the latest update on financial aid! Use your campus resources. You’ve got this! 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Student Emergency Grants Application - You can be awarded up to $1,500 a semester. Click here to apply and learn about the grant. The deadline is December 15, 2022. If you have any questions, contact One Stop Program/Health and Wellness department at 718-518-4141. 
  • New York State TAP and Part-Time TAP is now open! - For the first time ever, the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is available to part-time students! If you are enrolled in 6 to 11 credits, you may be eligible. Students can apply here. For assistance in completing your TAP application, contact the Financial Aid department here. 
  • Scholarship Information Session - The Glaelle Mathurin Community Foundation (GMCF) is proud to offer financial assistance to outstanding CUNY students. Three scholars will be selected to receive a fall scholarship of up to $2,000 for the academic school year. WEEK 4

Welcome to week 4. Now that you have settled in your courses, it is time to look into different opportunities such as scholarships, technology, and career workshops. 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • CUNYfirst Notifications – On Saturday, September 24, WA grades will be assigned for immunization (MMR) non-compliance. Log in to CUNYFirst and select the student center “tasks and holds” tile where you will see the immunization notification indicating where to upload your documents.   
  • Seeking Scholarships? – Be sure to check out the Scholarship Office’s Academic Works website for year-round scholarship opportunities. Also, the Hostos Engineering Academic Talent (HEAT) Scholarship is open until October 9. Program details can be found here. 
  • Student Technology Workshops – The Educational Technology office offers different virtual workshops. Check out the weekly calendar and register here. The CUNY “Are You Ready?” virtual class only takes 30 minutes; access it here.
  • Professional Development for Students – Free self-paced skill-building courses and training in high demand sectors: Business, IT & Software Development, Healthcare Administration, Data Analytics, and Professional/workplace skills are available on the CUNY’s 90-Day Upskilling Challenge.

WEEK 3

Take note and mark your calendars for some important upcoming deadlines. Don’t miss out learning about transfer deadlines, career options and dual degree programs! 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 
  • Dropping a Class? – Wednesday, September 14, is the last day to drop a class with a 25% tuition refund and without a W grade, which does not affect your GPA and might free up time to focus on the classes you know you can succeed in. It is also the last day to declare a major/minor for it to be effective for Fall 2022. 
  • CUNY Transfer Application – The Spring 2023 transfer application deadline is September 15. 
  • STEM and Dual Degree Programs Orientation Week – Beginning September 20, learn about our joint programs' requirements, transfer information and research opportunities. See the schedule here
  • Learn Engineering Design – The Solid Works workshop invites STEM students to earn a certificate and learn how to interpret engineering drawings along with an introduction to solid modeling software and analysis. The workshop starts September 15. Sign up here.   
  • Research your Career Options – Start your journey and understand the various career options available to you. Join in on one of two events on September 20 and September 21 at 4 p.m. Next, sign up and participate in a career hub session from September 20 to September 23 on how to launch your career with options in various sectors including Government, Law and Public Policy, Education and Human Services, and Art and Entertainment.

WEEK 2

Success is measured in small increments, and you have all successfully completed the first week of the fall 2022 semester — claim your victory!

  • Welcome Back Barbeque – Join us for food, games, music, and photo booth fun at Evelina Antonetty Park on Thursday, September 08, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (The park is adjacent to the A-building) 
  • Avoid “WN” Grade – In-person and online participation during the first weeks of classes is paramount to your success. Reach out to your instructor(s) to communicate any challenges. The class syllabus or Succeed@Hostos platform list your instructor’s contact information and office hours. 
  • First Year Experience “Meet and Greet” with faculty and advisors – Friday, September 9 at 1 p.m. in room C-596 
  • Student Leadership Academy – Interested in a campus ambassador position or seeking a leadership workshop? Applications are accepted on a rolling basis; however, workshops will begin on 9/16/2022. Click here to join!

WEEK 1

Welcome to Hostos! How excited are you to start the Fall semester?! Do you know how to get around the College? We’ve got you! Let’s get you familiar with the campus, Hostos resources and much, much more! 

 Here are the Caiman Clues:

  • Don't Know Where You’re Going on Campus? Find your way around Hostos with the campus map and learn where your classes are. 
  • Need Academic Support? – Hostos students are eligible to receive free tutoring in-person or online. The Writing Center and Hostos Academic Learning Center  tutors are available now.  Watch this video on how to request an HALC appointment and visit the Writing Center’s registration page here. 
  • Hostos Campus Resources – In addition to providing a study space, the library provides research and printing assistance, as well as access to textbooks. Learn more about the available resources. For example, at the Student Computing Center, such as computer access and printing. 
  • Need Help or Community Resources? – The staff at the One Stop Resource Center conduct free benefits screenings for Medicaid, food vouchers, housing, and public assistance. Additionally, students qualify for free and confidential counseling at the Hostos Counseling Center.

  • Get the DatesThe Fall 2022 semester starts on August 25. Make sure to stay up to date using the semester's Academic Calendar and note important deadlines, such as class changes, refund check, scholarship opportunities, COVID random testing, and days the college is closed. For example, on September 5 the college is closed for Labor Day. 
  • Stay Connected with Campus ResourcesTake a look at our  Campus Resources and Hostos Lingo. Find out how you can stay connected with advisors, coaches, tutors and campus services. 
  • Are You Ready?Navigating online learning can be challenging for many of us. To better prepare yourself, complete the CUNY “Are You Ready?” virtual class — it only takes 30 minutes. Click here for instructions on how to access the course.   
  • Student Technology Workshops  – Check out the different virtual workshops offered each week. Our Educational Technology office has a calendar for you to review here. 
  • Student Club Orientation – Register in the Office of Student Activities located in room C-371 on Friday, August 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
