Welcome to week 14! We are nearing the end of the semester and want to provide you a few more clues! 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • SUMMER 2022 WORKSHOPS For students needing to complete their remedial math requirements, sign up for a FREE summer workshop. The workshops will be offered in-person and online. The workshop schedule and registration is available via CUNYFirst. For more information email Workshopinfo@hostos.cuny.edu. 
  • CAMPUS HONORS PROGRAM  Each semester students with a GPA of 3.2 and above may enroll in an honors course to receive mentorship, engage in community service and participant benefits. Review the fall 2022 course offerings here and program application here. 
  • LIBERAL ARTS A.A. MAJOR – Hostos CC has several concentration options for you to consider and relevant coursework to guide your interest or explore future major such as English, Behavioral Sciences, Education, Community Health, Historical Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts offered at your senior college. Review the options here.

WEEK 13

Welcome to week 13 of the semester. In just a few weeks, the spring semester will end! We want to share these clues with you: 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • FALL 2021 INC GRADE – If you were granted an extension to submit work towards the successful completion of a Fall 2021 course, the deadline for completion of incomplete (INC) grades is May 17. Please contact your instructor or the department for further instructions. If you need advisement support, you should schedule a meeting via S@H. 
  • SUMMER SESSION – You can take courses over the summer and earn credits towards your degree completion. The Summer Session I begins June 6, and Session II beings July 11. Check out the summer ‘22 academic calendar for the schedule details. 
  • CROSS THE FINISH LINE – The Hostos Writing Center workshop “Coping with Exam Stress” will take place on May 5 at 4 p.m. either in-person (Rm C-593A) or online (register here). The Counseling Center will host “Crush It! How to Conquer Test Anxiety and Study Procrastination” on May 12 at 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. (link TBA here).

WEEK 12

Congratulations on making it to Week 12. As we enter the peak of the spring season, it is important not to fall off course. Stay connected to the Hostos campus community by attending some virtual workshops or taking advantage of our virtual resources. Being a college student is more than just going to class and doing homework, it is also about growing as a person and getting prepared for the future!

  • CUNYfirst Enrollment – Welcome 9.2 CUNYFirst student center! Use the schedule builder tile to sync your DegreeWorks plans or search/add courses from your degree maps program to your schedule. Watch this video to navigate schedule builder. 
  • CUNY Career Launch 2022 – Recruiting undergrads with limited work experience to apply for a paid summer internship experience. Students can launch their careers by using their classroom skills towards a job related to their major – apply here. Deadline Friday, April 29th! 
  • Explore History Forums – Join the May 4 presentation on “The Future of Black Studies” by author Dr. Abdul Alkalimat and hosted by the Black Studies Unit/Black Student Union at 2 p.m. (Access the discussion and presentation here), and “The Young Lords: A Radical History” by author Dr. Johanna Dernandez hosted by the Social Science Speakers Series at 3:30 p.m. (virtual meeting information TBA here).   
  • Student Leadership Event – Join the Student Leadership Academy weekly workshop on Friday afternoon and list your participation in your resume! The workshop titled “Look Up and Beyond with Jessica Janniere” will take place on April 29 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. Register here for 4/29, 5/6, 5/13.

WEEK 11

It’s week 11 and Spring break is around the corner. While there will be no class scheduled next week, don’t forget to take a look at this week’s clues!

Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Spring Break – From Friday April 15 to Friday April 22, no classes will be scheduled due to Spring Break. This is a great time to check in with your professors, Success Coach or Advisor about how things are going. Academic Calendar. 
  • CUNYfirst Upgrade – The campus solutions will upgrade its appearance to an enhanced, mobile-friendly home page with tile-based navigate tools instead of a text menu in mid-April. A student preview video of what to expect here. 
  • Own Your Own Power – Improve communication for healthier intimate relationships and life experiences hosted by Professor Linda D. Anderson with the authors of Silent Agreements: Sonia R. Banks and Michele L. Owens on 5/2, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Register here. 
  • Student Leadership Academy – Weekly Ambassador workshop on Friday, April 29, from 3:30 -5:30 p.m., on the topic: “Look Up and Beyond with Jessica Janniere." Register here for 4/29, 5/6, 5/13.

WEEK 10
 

It’s never too early to start thinking about next semester! Review the clues below to get a head start. Enrollment is opening soon, and we want to make sure you’re prepared. Outside of enrollment, we have a summer employment opportunity to share with you as well. 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Fall 2022 Enrollment – Fall 2022 and Summer 2022 enrollment opens on Wednesday, April 20! Make sure you speak with your Success Coach or Advisor about your next set of recommended courses. You can schedule an advisement appointment through Succeed@Hostos. 
  • COVID-19 Campus Policy – In-person and hybrid class attendance requires updated proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Make sure to upload your COVID-19 booster shot once you are eligible to be approved for on-campus activities this spring term and to register for in-person/hybrid summer/fall session classes. Tutorial Video. 
  • 2022-2023 FAFSA – Are you registering for the Summer or Fall 2022 semester? Complete your application before April 30 with your 2020 tax information. If you need assistance with the FAFSA/TAP form, schedule an appointment here with the financial aid office this month. 
  • SYEP 2022 – Summer Youth Employment Program Applications Open for New Yorkers Aged 14-24. The program will include two six-week cohorts beginning July 5 and running through August 20. Applications will be open through Friday, April 22, 2022.

Welcome to week 9! There are a lot of great events coming up for you to join. Check out some of the offerings below.

  • Spring/Summer 2022 Graduate? – Don’t forget to apply for graduation! Students that will have completed their current degree or certificate requirements by the end of the term Spring 2022, must apply for graduation through CUNYfirst. The last day to apply is Monday, April 4, 2022. If you need additional assistance, contact the Graduation Audit Unit by email: graduationaudit@hostos.cuny.edu   
  • Money Moves – Learn about budgeting and its importance with SSCU and SGA! Join Zoom on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:30 pm. 
  • Velada HostosianaJoin us on Thursday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m. for a discussion with Paola Ramos, VICE correspondent and author, who will discuss her latest book in which she explores the complexities of Latinidad. Attend the Zoom event here. 
  • Atrium Campus Event – The Health & Wellness Office will host an information table and activity in solidarity with Sexual Assault Awareness Month on Tuesday, April 5th from 8 a.m. to 1p.m. 
  • Academic Success – Attend a technology student workshop (sign-up here), join a virtual or in-person study group at the HALC or meet with a writing tutor (register here). Utilizing these resources will allow you to reflect on your progress, maintain your academic standing or improve your class outcomes.

WEEK 8

Welcome to week 8! Congratulations, you have passed the halfway point of the semester. Take a second to give yourself a pat on the back and some credit for how hard you have worked thus far! Now is also a good time to look forward and think about the next steps. 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Spring/Summer 2022 Graduate? – The deadline to apply for graduation is April 4. If you are graduating this term, attend a workshop on March 23 at 2 p.m. to learn more about the process. Register here. 
  • Women in STEM – Celebrate International Women’s History Month with a panel discussion hosted by Projecto Access STEP and CSTEP on March 23 at 6 p.m. Register here. 
  • Hostos Library Update – Starting March 26 the library will be open on weekends. Reservations are no longer required for use of the library space, and you can visit during the open hours. 
  • Need a Resume? – Join Career Services and the Story2 webinar on March 29 at 5 p.m. to write and create a resume that will help put your best self forward and shine in a professional setting. Zoom Meeting Link here

WEEK 7

Happy Spring. As we welcome new beginnings and opportunities, take some time to reflect on your progress so far and continue your personal and professional growth this semester by attending one of the activities shared in this week’s Caiman Clues. 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Hostos 2022 Ceremony – The 52nd Commencement Ceremony will take place in the Hostos Main Theatre on May 31 and June 2, according to graduates’ degree programs. Prospective graduates should order their cap and gowns here and complete this form to receive further information about the ceremony. 
  • Career Readiness – Learn to write a personal statement to stand out when applying for scholarships or grants on March 16 at 5 p.m. Join here or March 17 at 4 p.m. Register here. 
  • Academic and Personal Development – Along with hosting group activities and workshop, the Counseling Center is available to meet with students to discuss barriers and personal concerns preventing you from excelling in your studies. Schedule an appointment here. 
  • Campus Event – Back to Basics: Social Engagement will lead students to explore their social transition and experiences in college on March 16 from 3-4:15 p.m. Register here.

WEEK 6

We are in week 6! As the semester progresses, it is important to stay connected. This week, we wanted to introduce some more campus resources that can contribute to your success as a student. 
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Are You Ready? – Navigating online learning can be challenging for many of us. To better prepare, complete the CUNY “Are You Ready?” virtual class. It only takes 30 minutes. Click here for instructions on how to access the course. 
  • Student Technology Workshops – Check out the different virtual workshops offered each week. Our Educational Technology office has a calendar for you to review here. 
  • HOPE Program – Hostos' HOPE Program is recruiting participants for its seven-week two-generation program, designed specifically for student parents and their school-aged children (Pre-k through 8th grade). Contact Prof. Sarah Hoiland at HOPE@hostos.cuny.edu for more information. 
  • Writing Seminar: Thesis Statement – Join on Thursday, 3/10 at 4 p.m., Register here.

WEEK 5

Welcome to Week 5! The College has some internship opportunities coming up we want you to know about! You can also work directly with our Career Services Office to find out about job opportunities and career advancement options.

  • Grow with Google – Interested in digital skills, career readiness or entrepreneurship? Career Services will host an information session on March 9 (1 p.m. or 5 p.m.) for students seeking to prepare for internships and post-college opportunities. For more information, click here. 

  • NY Yankees Internship – Are you graduating soon? Consider an internship experience with the New York Yankees! The internship will begin in March. Fill out this Interest Form. 

  • Career Services – Connect with Career Services for all your internship questions and needs. You can access the HIRECAIMANS symplicity career link for internship and job opportunities. To meet with a specialist directly, visit Succeed@Hostos to schedule an appointment.

WEEK 4

Welcome to week 4! Hopefully you’re settling into your classes nicely. In between your studies, we have some new clues for you! 

Caiman Clues: 
  • Succeed@Hostos In addition to using Succeed@Hostos to schedule your advisement appointments with your Advisor or Success Coach, professors will raise flags for concerns or give kudos to students doing well in their courses. Check out what professors are saying.  
  • Virtual Event Back to Basics: Academic Experience will explore student experiences with professional communication techniques and learn February 23 from 3 p.m.-4:15 p.m.. Use this link to register. 
  • Scholarship alert Never too early to prepare for the next academic year. The Excelsior Scholarship Spring Term 2022 application deadline is March 7, 2022. The Excelsior Scholarship covers tuition for eligible CUNY students who earn at least 15 credits per semester. 
  • Learn Engineering Design and get a CSWA Certificate for free! CSTEP SolidWorks Workshop Series begins Friday, March 4, 2022 from 5 to 6 p.m. Register here.

We hope you had a good start and have settled into your spring semester schedule. By this time, you have attended your classes, met your professors and peers, started working on assignments, and you may have received feedback or grades from your professors. This week’s clues include tips on how to maintain connections on campus, looking for help when you need it and making the most of your college experience. You got this!

  • Stay ConnectedIf you have questions about how to improve your college experience, schedule an advisement meeting with your Success Coach, ASAP Advisor or College Discovery Coach. Also, review your Hostos Webmail for communication from your instructors, college campus offices, and staff.  
  • Check Your Hostos Email for “The Link”The Office of Student Activities invites students to attend campus activities and events including Black History Month celebration, COVID Q&A hosted by Health & Wellness and more.... 
  • Interested in Scholarship and Academic Resource Opportunities?  Students and in some cases even family members can apply! Be sure to check out the Academic Works website for year-long scholarship opportunities. Also, Professor Sarah Hoiland is presenting the Hostos Holistic Oasis for Parents’ Education Program (HOPE). Check out the requirements and Apply Now!final deadline is March 15. 
  • Do You Need a Study Space? The Hostos Library is open and also provides help online. Check the library hours, chat with a librarian to get help with research, citation and using the archives or reserve a study space using this link.

Welcome to the start of the spring semester! To help you prepare for the semester, use the links below to access important information and familiarize yourself with the different platforms and learning technologies that are part of your courses at Hostos. We want you to start the semester on the right track!  
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Career Options Seminar – Get valuable information on career options and equip yourself with the tools you need to clarify your major. Join us on 2/17 at 2 p.m. here & 2/23 at 5 p.m. here. 
  • Attending In-Person Classes? – Make sure you have a valid Hostos ID (obtain the card or update the term sticker in the B-Bldg.) and approved vaccination verification to be on-campus. Check your Hostos e-mail from Public Safety on the ID Center’s dates & times 
  • Check Your CUNYfirst To-Do List – In your student center this section will display notifications (use more details to select only Hostos CC) such as Immunization/Meningitis Acknowledgement, SPARC online training (via Blackboard) or Financial Aid Verification items. Complete the pending items as soon as possible! 
  • Need Academic Support? – All students are eligible to receive free tutoring in-person or online through the Hostos Academic Learning Center (HALC). To watch a video on how to request an appointment click hereThe Writing Center is also providing support for writing assignments. The Library is open to assist you in researchstudy spaceprinting and textbooks. Check out these resources in the Student Computing Center for computer access and printing. 
  • Need Resources Outside of Class? –The staff at the One Stop Resource Center conduct free benefits screenings for Medicaid, food vouchers, housing, and public assistance. If you are feeling stressed or anxious, we are here to help. As a student, you qualify for free and confidential counseling at the Hostos CC Counseling Center. Welcome to the start of the spring semester! To help you prepare for the semester, use the links below to access important information and familiarize yourself with the different platforms and learning technologies that are part of your courses at Hostos. We want you to start the semester on the right track!   
   
Here are the Caiman Clues: 
  
Verify You Schedule – Review your schedule on your CUNYfirst Student Center. Classes are listed as in-person, online-synchronous (specific day and times when you need to log in) and online-asynchronous (do not have a required meeting time). Always consult with your instructor when in doubt.   
Review Your Blackboard Account  Please make sure you check out each class on Blackboard for more course related information and read your syllabus.   
Get Your Books – Many classes at Hostos require certain textbooks which you buy online at the official Hostos Bookstore. If you log in with your CUNYfirst credentials, your books will pop up automatically. 
Semester Checklist – Check out this student checklist so that you can begin your semester successfully. Find links on vaccination verification, requesting a loaner laptop, complete the “Are You ready?” virtual class, and so much more!

PRE-WEEK

Hope you had a great winter break! We are so excited to welcome you to a new semester here at Hostos Community College. Every week, we will be sending out helpful tips and reminders called Caiman Clues.  
 
Here are the Caiman Clues: 
  • Student Vaccination Policy – If you are taking in-person or hybrid courses, you are required to submit your proof of vaccination by January 27, 2022. Unvaccinated students who have on-campus class sessions will be dropped. 
  • Be Ready – Hostos' reopening plan and safety guidelines can be found on our Ready page. You can also apply for a loaner laptop. 
  • Are You Ready? – Navigating online learning can be challenging for many of us. To better prepare yourself, complete the CUNY “Are You Ready?” virtual class — it only takes 30 minutes. Click here for instructions on how to access the course. 
  • Get the Dates– The Spring 2022 semester starts on January 28. Make sure to stay up to date using the semester's Academic Calendar.
