Acclaimed PBS Series “College Behind Bars” Comes to Hostos
as a Four-Part Educational Series Educating for Change

Professor Sarah Hoiland and Student Services Specialist Marsha Milan-Bethel bring the acclaimed PBS documentary series "College Behind Bars" to Eugenio María de Hostos Community College as a 2021 four-part program titled Educating for Change. “We want to leverage this incredible documentary to highlight Hostos’ commitment to justice-involved students, our community, and the transformative power of higher education by foregrounding panelists’ direct experiences and highlighting the rigorous academic environment in the Bard Prison Initiative as a vehicle for social change inside and outside of jails and prisons,” said Dr. Sarah Hoiland. “Hostos’ mission is to provide educational opportunities leading to socio-economic mobility to a diverse student population;” said Milan-Bethel “therefore, Hostos is well positioned to work with the justice-involved population to reduce recidivism rates and increase post-secondary graduation rates in New York City.”
