Transforming Lives, Forging Futures since 1968

Today, Eugenio María de Hostos Community College of The City University of New York announced the kick-off of its 50th anniversary season, Transforming Lives, Forging Futures since 1968, and its year-long, event-filled celebration that will run through June 2018. The statement was issued after a college-wide event held at the College.

During the ceremony, Hostos President David Gómez and SVP Esther Rodríguez-Chardavoyne unveiled the Hostos50 website, which features two full-fledged components:  a historical timeline and an oral history collective that currently features the testimony of more than 100 people, reflecting the experiences of alumni, community members, faculty, former College presidents, friends, staff and students.

“The community demanded Hostos 50 years ago, and since that time, the College has grown into something truly special,” Hostos President Dr. David Gómez said. “We are now not only the central hub for higher education in the South Bronx, but for job training, social and economic development, arts and culture, and community engagement. Hostos has expanded its footprint exponentially, and we are proud to help build a bridge to a better Bronx and beyond. Celebrating where we have come from, as well as where we are going, is something the entire campus and community is truly excited about.”

Hostos Community College also announced it will open its doors for public symposiums about Eugenio María de Hostos, the pioneering educator and human rights activist for whom the College is named; the state of the Bronx; and the future of the American Dream and immigration later in the year.

Lastly, the College pledged to give back to its neighbors and community with a “Big Event,” which will feature 50 acts of service with a total of 500 volunteers from the College over the next year.

The College will issue regularly updated announcements related to its 50th anniversary. For more information, please visit the Hostos50 website: www.hostos.cuny.edu/Hostos50
