Friday, November 8, 2013 (Bronx, NY) – After a long hiatus, The Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture (HCAC) resumes its artistic collaboration with the award-winning Teatro SEA (Society of the Educational Arts, Inc.). Based in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, SEA is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States.
The first performance will be the musical “La Cucarachita Martina” (Martina, the Little Roach) which will be presented on Saturday, November 16, at 3 PM (doors open at 2:30 PM) in the Repertory Theater at the Hostos Center for the Arts and Culture at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
General admission tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available at the Center’s Box Office, opened Mon. – Fri. 12:30 PM to 6:30 PM, and two hours prior to performance. Based on Cuban and Puerto Rican folklore, “La Cucarachita Martina/Martina, the Little Roach” tells a comical tale of a little roach who, in her journey towards finding love, finds happiness and friendship. With the use of colorful bunrakú puppetry designed by Puerto Rican master puppeteer José López, children will be transported into a rich, dream-like world where they interact with the characters and understand the communication of animals through the use of playful sounds. Audiences of all ages are sure to enjoy the Rock and Latin sounds that create this enchanting musical tale, which will be offered in both Spanish and English simultaneously.

Established in 1985, SEA is the premiere Bilingual Arts-in-Education Organization and Latino Children’s Theatre in the United States. SEA has created and produced a combination of educational theatre productions and art workshops/programs specifically designed to examine, challenge and create possible solutions for current educational, social and community issues. Its internationally celebrated programs include school, outdoor, community and Main stage performances, workshops and residencies, among others, reaching over 75,000 children and young adults every year. In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, SEA opened a brand new state-of-the-art performance space at the Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural and Educational Center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side
Following “La Cucarachita Martina”, Hostos and Teatro SAE will present “La Muela del Rey Farfán” (The Toothache of King Farfan) on Saturday, December 14, at 3 PM.
Funding for “La Cucarachita Martina” is provided by the Hostos Community College Foundation with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
