Assistant Professor Kristopher Burrell.
Hostos is pleased to announce that Kristopher Burrell, an Assistant Professor in the Behavioral & Social Sciences Department, was awarded a CUNY Community College Grant to help research and write an article titled, “Black Women Activist-Intellectuals and the Struggle for Quality Education, 1954-1965.”

The research project will explore women’s intellectual influences and roles in New York City during the Civil Rights Movement and be part of a larger volume of articles on “Civil Rights & Black Power in the North and West,” which Burrell said is aimed at reconceptualizing and rethinking Jim Crow outside of the South.

The grant will also support a Hostos honors student, Paul Torres, who will work with Burrell on the project. Burrell, who teaches history and has been with Hostos since 2009, was also the recipient of a PSC CUNY grant award during the 2014-2015 academic year and a Title V Conference grant during the 2015-2016 academic year.
