Women’s Team Wins 8th Consecutive CUNY-wide Championship; Men’s Wins Back-to-Back Top Title

In an electrifying display of heart and hustle this past Friday, February 21, both the Hostos women’s and men’s teams solidified their status as CUNY champions by capturing the 2025 CUNY Community College Basketball Championship. With a season defined by resilience and high-stakes moments, the victories set the stage for an intense Region XV Tournament this week and weekend.
“Both teams did a fantastic job on Friday and throughout the season. We’re proud of their performance and look forward to cheering on them during the postseason,” said Brent Wilson, Director of Hostos Athletics.
Women's Team: A Nail-Biting Victory
Ranked #5 nationally in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National poll, the Lady Caimans delivered a masterclass in determination when they squared off against #4 Kingsborough Community College. Notably, this victory marks the eighth consecutive CUNY Championship for the women, underscoring their relentless pursuit of excellence.
The outcome was decided dramatically in a game where momentum swung back and forth. With just 2.6 seconds remaining, Hostos #4 Daja White drilled a three-pointer to seal the win. White led the charge with 23 points, ably supported by Sandra Asamoah (10 points), Jozai Vazquez (14 points and 11 rebounds), and Aniyah Robinson (18 points and 13 rebounds).
This thrilling win extended their remarkable 22-1 record and earned the Lady Caimans the coveted #1 seed in the Region XV Tournament at Kingsborough. They will kick off tournament play on Saturday, March 1, at 12 p.m. against the Bronx CC/Nassau CC matchup winner.
Men's Team: A Second-Half Surge to Victory
The men’s team, facing a challenging first half with a score of 53-44 at halftime, turned adversity into triumph with an explosive second-half performance. They ultimately emerged victorious with a final score of 93-84. This latest triumph marks back-to-back CUNY Championships for the men.
Harry Bonilla spearheaded the comeback with a game-high 33 points, while Blake Buckhannan contributed 15 points, Tyrese Conway added 16 points along with 11 rebounds, and Justin Umunakwe chipped in 17 points. Three other players also reached double figures, showcasing the depth and determination of the squad.
With this win, the men have secured a #2 seed in the Region XV Tournament. They will host a home game tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25, at 7 p.m. against Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). A win in that contest will propel them to the semifinals, scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Kingsborough.
Looking Ahead
The dual victories on Friday have set a high standard and generated immense excitement as both teams prepare for the upcoming Region XV Tournament.
