From April 21 to 25, we gathered to reflect on our commitment to the planet during the Natural Sciences Department’s 2025 Earth Week Celebration, informed by this year’s Earth Day (April 22) theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.” The informative and interactive event’s keynote presentation took place on Wednesday, April 23, with heartfelt greetings from President Daisy Cocco De Filippis, who emphasized the importance of caring for our Earth, and from Professor Anna Ivanova. Additionally, our Student Government Association (SGA) President, Dainma Martínez, emphasized the crucial need for environmental awareness, while Professor and Chair of Natural Sciences, Yoel Rodríguez, welcomed everyone and thanked all involved in making the celebration possible.

We were pleased to welcome Weronika Ciechowska-Polanco from NYSERDA, who delivered a keynote presentation titled "Battery Energy Storage 101." In her talk, she discussed how renewable energy sources can combat climate change, emphasizing the importance of lithium-ion batteries for a greener energy grid. The panel on Environmental Challenges featured insights from Professor Julie Trachman on greenhouse gas emissions; Katherine Sibel, Community Climate Resiliency Coordinator, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, on health risks from extreme heat; and student Melanie Luciano, who highlighted air pollution in the Bronx.
Throughout the week, the Natural Sciences Department also hosted hands-on STEM activities, trivia games, the Hostos STEM Olympiad, and more, making science engaging and accessible!

“We are grateful to everyone—students, faculty, staff, and administration—who contributed to the success of this year’s Earth Week Celebration. Together, we must raise climate awareness and educate our community to protect our one and only Earth,” said Professor Yoel Rodríguez.

Let’s keep the momentum going for a sustainable future!
