Hostos Professor Linda Hirsch has helped to bring a Hostos and CUNY program to the world stage. Hirsch, along with Dennis Paoli from Hunter College, contributed a piece about the Writing Across The Curriculum (
WAC) program in the web-based book,
Writing Programs Wordwide.
Titled, “The City University of New York: The Implementation and Impact of WAC/WID in a Multi-Campus US Urban University,” the piece examines the ongoing WAC initiative at CUNY among the most diverse in students’ language and cultural backgrounds. The essay provides an overview of WAC at CUNY’s 24 campuses, including description of its unique Writing Fellows program, which employs PhD candidates from across disciplines.
Hirsch and Paoli give special focus to the implementation and impact of WAC principles and practices at two campuses: Hostos Community College, an urban, bilingual community college located in the south Bronx, one of New York City’s poorest neighborhoods; and Hunter College, a senior college in mid-Manhattan with graduate programs and four professional graduate schools drawing students from throughout the City.
Writing Programs Wordwide is produced by UC Davis, School of Education. The web-based publication includes essays and articles written in multiple languages, video and audio interviews of writing program administrators and teacher leaders, and photographs portraying the writing program and students at different colleges, universities, or technical institutes around the world.

Host Linda Hirsch, Ph.D., is a professor of English at Hostos Community College/CUNY. She is an expert on literacy development, among both native and non-native speakers of English. Professor Hirsch has taught graduate students at Columbia University Teacher’s College, New York University and the CUNY Graduate Center. She also has served as a content consultant on PBS’s television series,
Ghostwriter, and she is the education consultant and producer of an education segment on BronxNet’s,
Open, a live cable television program.
