Wednesday, June 5, 2013 (Bronx, NY) - Hostos Community College is pleased to announce that the CUNY TV program, “EdCast,” produced and hosted by Hostos Professor Linda Hirsch and Lehman Professor Jim Carney, has won its second consecutive Telly Award. The 2013 award honoring excellence in cable TV programming was given for the segment, “Shaping Children’s Emerging Literacies,” which featured Hunter College literacy expert Elliott Koreman.

"The Telly is one of the most prestigious awards in cable broadcasting, and we are so proud to have received this honor,” Dr. Hirsch said. “At ‘EdCast,’ we pride ourselves on providing educational programming that serves our community by increasing awareness of important issues in education."

A literacy development expert, as well as member of the English faculty at Hostos, Dr. Hirsch was the education consultant and producer of an education segment on “BronxTalk” and “Open,” two live cable TV programs on BronxNet, and a content consultant for the PBS television series “Ghostwriter.” She has also taught graduate courses at Columbia University’s Teachers College, New York University, and the CUNY Graduate Center.

“EdCast” is a unique, 30-minute monthly series that has been aired since 2007 on CUNY TV, the channel of The City University of New York. Created, written, produced, and hosted by educators and intended for everyone interested in education, it explores issues ranging from pre-K through post-secondary instruction.

Telly Awards are presented by the New York City-based organization of the same name. Its stated purpose is to honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web.

CUNY TV is cablecast in the five boroughs of New York City on Channel 75 (Time Warner and Optimum), Channel 77 (RCN Cable) and Channel 30 (Verizon FiOS). “ EdCast” and all other archived shows are available on the CUNY TV website (http://cuny.tv).
