The CUNY Fatherhood Academy (CFA) at Hostos is holding its first open house on January 11, 2016.

This special orientation will be held in the JFK Room (In the C-Building near the campus cafeteria), from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and will provide an introduction to the community and celebrate New York City’s expansion of this important program.

CFA, a program of the NYC Young Men’s Initiative (YMI), is a free, 16-week high school equivalency and college preparatory program for resident New York City fathers ages 18 to 24. CFA promotes responsible parenting, college readiness, and work among unemployed and underemployed fathers. Hostos Community College, selected through a highly-competitive proposal process, was awarded the grant due to its extensive experience with similar programs and populations, its strong program model, and a commitment to providing significant leveraged resources.

The community is encouraged to attend and bring potential students/clients who may fit the criteria and learn more about this program. The CFA’s goal is to increase familial engagement, make sure students attain a High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma, and acquire gainful employment. The program’s central focus is to help young fathers prepare for and enroll into college with the understanding that earning a college degree is the most effective path toward providing long-term economic sustainability for themselves and their families.

At Hostos Community College, participants in the program will receive:
• Preparation for the TASC, NY’s high school equivalency exam;
• Career and educational exploration;
• Preparation for college enrollment and job placement;
• Work experience through internships and/or part-time jobs;
• Workshops on important parenthood topics including familial bonding, health, and financial literacy.

To be eligible students must:
• Be a male between the ages of 18 and 24 years;
• Be eligible to work in the United States (citizen, have a green card, or have a work visa);
• Not be enrolled in college or another training program;
• Have a child or be expecting a baby.

Please RSVP Anthony Bowles at abowles@hostos.cuny.edu if you plan to attend the open house in the C-Building (East Academic Complex, JFK Room) at 450 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY, 10451.
