The Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development (CEWD) at Hostos covers everything from healthcare to information technology, non-profits, business and personal development, and programs for children. Recently, the Division announced some impressive enrollment numbers despite the challenging times—proof positive that when it comes to getting the job done, CEWD is firing on all cylinders.

Entry-level Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certifications and NYC Department of Buildings-approved Site Safety courses for individuals entering the construction industry are offered through CEWD, and the results are in:
  • 7 students completed Site Safety courses for the 32BJ labor union.
  • 20 students completed Site Safety & OSHA courses for Living Redemption.
  • 4 CUNY Fatherhood Academy students completed OSHA training.
  • 8 students completed Site Safety & OSHA for Osborne Association.
  • 11 students completed OSHA training funded through NYCHA.
The Adult Learning Center (ALC) at Hostos provides both tuition and tuition-free High School Equivalency (formerly GED) and ESOL courses, and reports the following:
  • 52 students are currently registered in Spring HSE tuition.
  • 74 students are currently registered in Spring HSE grant-funded.
  • 67 students completed tuition-based HSE from the Fall semester.
  • 34 students completed grant-funded HSE from the Fall semester.
  • 18 students are currently enrolled in ESOL Advanced from the Fall semester.
  • 19 students are currently enrolled in ESOL High Intermediate from the Fall semester.
  • 24 students are currently enrolled in ESOL Low Intermediate from the Fall semester.
CEWD's various certificate and licensure programs prepare participants for in-demand careers in a variety of sectors. This is how matters stand as of mid-February:
  • 9 students completed Plumbing from the Fall semester.
  • 9 students completed Basic Electrical I & II from the Fall semester.
  • 24 students completed Microsoft Office from the Fall semester.
  • 23 students are currently enrolled in Microsoft Office.
  • 9 students are currently enrolled in Business Administration Management.
  • 14 students are currently enrolled in Teacher Assistant.
CEWD Interim Dean Peter Mertens is justifiably proud of these figures. “Enrollment and completion rates indicate the continuing need for CEWD’s services,” he said. “The courses and certificates offered are crucial in ensuring that life in the Bronx and the greater NYC area runs smoothly, safely, and soundly.”

Hostos is part of the consortium of New York City community colleges of CUNY, led by Queensborough Community College, and awarded a nearly $5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant that will provide Technology, Health Care, and Education upskilling programs to people in underemployed industries and communities across New York City, especially those impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. The grant will enable Queensborough Community College, the Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, Hostos Community College, LaGuardia Community College and Kingsborough Community College to refine and enhance local workforce development programs.
