Idelsa Méndez, Hostos Community College Development Manager, is the recipient of the New York Yankees Community Achievement Award. As part of the annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, the legendary baseball team honor individuals and organizations that are making a difference in their community – and this year Méndez and Hostos Community College were singled out.

Méndez is a beloved figure in the Bronx community, well known for helping Hostos students. Recently, noting how the Covid-19 pandemic was negatively affecting Hostos students suffering from food insecurity, she united the Mott Haven Bar and Grill and World Central Kitchen forces to provide free meals for Hostos students.

The initiative was later extended to all Bronx CUNY students. By the end of June, an estimated 8,000 free meals had been distributed to students in need, the college's essential workers, and public safety officers.

“Idelsa Méndez epitomizes the Hostos spirit, of caring for the communities we serve,” Interim President Daisy Cocco De Filippis said on learning of the award. “Her caring and generous spirit is an inspiration to us all.”

Congratulations to Idelsa on behalf of the entire Hostos community!
