Student engineering.

On Aug. 9, the Savoy Multipurpose Room was transformed into a science and technology testing laboratory, as more than 100 students from Hostos’ “Proyecto Access STEP” participated in the annual Engineering Day and Closing Ceremony.

This program provides underrepresented and economically disadvantaged middle and high school students a fun environment to foster interest in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines, while encouraging the pursuit of these fields. Proyecto Access works as an intensive six-week summer STEM program that reinforces the development of students’ abstract reasoning and problem solving skills.

At the event, students showed off robotics, bridge and tower projects, as well as poster presentations and research papers that were judged by a panel of Hostos faculty. A day later, an awards event and closing ceremony was held. This summer, the program served 200 students.
