On Friday, May 29, Hostos Community College celebrated its 50th Commencement ceremony with a record 1,413 students receiving degrees. The ceremony was held virtually on the Hostos YouTube channel due to the impact of the Covid-19 virus and the Governor’s executive order
on social gatherings.

Remarks from CUNY Chancellor Dr. Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Hostos President David Gómez, Senator Charles E. Schumer, and Lieutenant Governor Kathleen C. Hochul addressed the “unconventional” nature of this year’s Commencement and celebrated the graduating class’s strength, resolve, and achievements.

Political activist and commentator Karine Jean-Pierre was this year’s Commencement Speaker. Born in Haiti and raised in Queens, NY, Ms. Jean-Pierre spoke of her educational and personal journey and of the importance of imagination and empathy in understanding – and changing – the world.
