As you prepare to transition to distance education, here are a few checklist items you are recommended to note prior to commencing your teaching so that you are fully prepared:

Blackboard and other Academic Technology Workshops

The Office of Educational Technology is and will be offering online workshops throughout the remaining of the semester on topics such as Blackboard basics, Blackboard Collaborate, Lecture Capture, Grade Center, Assessment Tools, Discussion Board, Accessibility, and more. (click here to enroll)

How to access Email

You can use your Hostos email address to login to Hostos webmail from anywhere as long as you have internet access. If you do not know your Hostos email address, you can look it up here using the last 6 digits of your social security ID and your first name. Once you know your email address you can go to https://webmail.hostos.cuny.edu to access your email. Keep in mind that the first part of your email address, before the "@" sign is your Hostos Login that you will use to login to Hostos provided student systems such as Succeed@Hostos.

How to reset your password

If you need to reset your password you can use our Self Service Password Management (SSPM) tool. You will need to know your Hostos Login (the first part of your eMail address). You will have options to reset or unlock your password if necessary. If you have never used the SSPM before you might be required to enroll. Once you enroll you will be able to set your challenge questions and answers, so at a later date you will be able to reset your password if you need to.

How to access Blackboard and additional ways to Get Ready for distance education

During this period you will be asked to access your course materials through Blackboard. Also, all of your classes will be offered online. Here is a link that will guide you to the academic resources being offered: https://commons.hostos.cuny.edu/edtech/academiccontinuity.

How to get a laptop (from EdTech)

The Educational Technology Department (EdTech) has a limited number of laptops available to loan to Faculty on a first-come-first-served basis. Please contact the department to EdTechSupport@hostos.cuny.edu if you have a need for a laptop.

How to access the Library databases
  1. To access databases or sign-in to OneSearch use your CUNY Login account Username [Firstname.LastnameNN@login.cuny.edu], where “NN” is the last 2+ digits of your CUNY EMPLID and your Password.
  2. If you do not know your CUNY Login, please activate your account by clicking this link and following instructions. For more information on the CUNY Login, please see CUNY Login FAQ’s.
  3. For Library assistance regarding the CUNY Login, please use the Library Chat.

How to setup Succeed@Hostos (Starfish) for "virtual office hours"

Succeed@Hostos is an integrated program designed to help students achieve their academic goals. This program provides the college community unique opportunities to stay in touch with an array of services and resources to maximize students’ academic and personal success. You can access Succeed@Hostos here. Please take some time to fill out your staff profile. Also, take some time to review how to update your office hours.

For any questions regarding Succeed@Hostos, students can contact their Coach (x2560) or Academic Advisement (x6547). For assistance with logging in/accessing the system, please contact the IT Service Desk at 718-518-6646 or e-mail hccithelp@hostos.cuny.edu. You may also visit the IT department, room B-420 or the Student Computing Center (SCC), room C-595.

How to Use Skype for meetings with colleagues and students

If you need to meet with your students or other colleagues when you are off campus, you can use Skype for Business: http://www.hostos.cuny.edu/IT/Skype. If you have a desktop or a mobile device you can download Skype for Business from here. After you install the app you will use your Hostos full email address and your password to login.

Anti-Virus Software

Having anti-virus protection is essential to preventing serious damage to your computer caused by viruses. Many internet service providers (ISP) have free anti-virus software available for customers. Call your ISP or log in to your account to find out how you can download your free copy.

McAfee anti-virus software is also available for free through CUNY. To download McAfee, log in with your CUNY credentials.
