Who are your local matriarchs? How do young women lead in keeping diasporic movement, rhythms, and storytelling alive? Join dancers Margia Shiriti of Bangladesh Academy of Fine Arts and Catherine Soliz Rey of Wabafu Garifuna Dance Theater in discussion on building community for and by Bangladeshi and Central American New Yorkers. We will discuss their journeys as dancers and directors of women led multigenerational dance schools in the Bronx. The interview will be hosted by teens from Mind-Builder's Folk Culture Program, followed by a Q&A with the artists. This evening will close out our current exhibit, Feelings of Home: Folk Culture and Memory.

Folk Culture is the study of the art, rituals and traditions that permeate our everyday lives. Whether it’s about style, food, music, stories, hobbies or beliefs, interns in the Mind-Builders Dr. Beverly J. Robinson Community Folk Culture Program celebrate our heritage – learning from our past and present in order to understand our similarities and appreciate our differences. In this program, student interns ages 14-21 learn how to interview, videotape, and present folk artists from the community, participate in online video conferencing coordinated by the Smithsonian, create blogs, photos, videos/DVD's, and create a portfolio of their work.
