Join us for 90-minutes of discussion, practice, and exploration of the art of singing, storytelling and song writing in Bomba and Plena. Victor Vélez has over thirty years of knowledge and practice as a vocalist and percussionist of both genres; and is credited with writing some of the most well-known Bomba songs of today. His extensive work in research and with countless elders in the community also makes him one of the most knowledgeable orators of traditional Bomba and Plena singing, meanings and voices. This workshop is free and open to all – both singers and non-singers alike.

BomPlenazo is a biennial Festival, established in 2000, that presents and celebrates the practices and the communities of Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena, from both the island and diaspora communities. Produced by the Hostos Center for Arts & Culture and guided by an Advisory Committee of musical practitioners and community members, BomPlenazo is made possible by funding support from: National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, The Howard Gilman Foundation, the offices of City Council member Rafael Salamanca, Jr., and New York State Assembly Member José Rivera.
