A Celebration of Dominican Music
Bachata with ANDRE VELOZ
Performance Premiere and Live Interview Hosted by Dr. Paul Austerlitz

Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, is proud to premier our Celebration of Dominican Music series with Andre Veloz in a stellar Bachata concert performance on the stage of the Hostos Main Theater. After the concert, Andre Veloz will appear with scholar and musician Paul Austerlitz in an engaging conversation about the history of Bachata, its key figures, as well as Veloz’ own career and music.

Andre Veloz is a renaissance woman – a bachetera, songwriter, painter and actor. Born in St. Croix and raised in El Cibao, the heartland of the Dominican Republic, she is faithful to her Dominican roots focusing on Bachata. She has taken her music and cultural heritage to stages such as Lincoln Center and to Folk Festivals throughout the United States, including those in Montana, Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina.

Paul Austerlitz is the Distinguished Visiting Research Scholar at the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York. He is an ethnomusicologist, musician and the author of two books: Merengue: Dominican Music and Dominican Identity and Jazz Consciousness: Music, Race and Humanity. Austerlitz is a member of the Dominican Academy of Sciences.
