Oni Oni is a poem based on Afro-Cuban mythology. It narrates the story of Yemayá – the owner of the oceans and mother of all – and her adopted son Changó, a warrior who rules over thunder and drums. Using dance, live music, drama and beautiful costumes, this folklore-inspired piece celebrates Cuba’s African cultural heritage and rich story-telling traditions.

Oni Oni is written, choreographed and directed by Danys “La Mora” Pérez, the award-winning founder of Oyu Oro, a collective of artists who defend the traditions of Afro-descendant culture through dance, song and music.

Oni Oni is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. Media Sponsor: Center for Traditional Music and Dance.

The CUNY Dance Initiative (CDI) receives major support from The Mertz Gilmore Foundation and Howard Gilman Foundation. Additional support is provided by the Jerome Robbins Foundation, SHS Foundation, Harkness Foundation for Dance, the National Endowment for the Arts, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. CDI and Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture are part of Dance/NYC’s New York City Dance Rehearsal Space Subsidy Program, made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
