Rooted in Our Mission, Our Compass to the Future
The Hostos Community College Strategic Plan 2011-2016

President Matos Rodríguez Unveils Five-Year Strategic Plan At State of the College AddressFriday, October 28, 2011 (Bronx, NY) – Yesterday in a room packed with students, faculty, and staff members, President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez unveiled Eugenio María de Hostos Community College’s Five-Year Strategic Plan during his State of the College Address.

President Matos Rodríguez noted that the strategic planning process reaffirmed Hostos’ mission, which is as relevant today as it was when the college was founded.  Moreover, the strength of and commitment to the mission will continue to serve as the guiding compass for the Hostos of tomorrow, particularly in the neighborhood it calls home.

In the Strategic Plan, President Matos Rodríguez states:

“We engaged in strategic planning in order to ensure our relevancy to the students and the communities we serve today and in the immediate future.  Our mission served as our compass throughout the strategic planning process.  It grounded us in our signature approach—to work with the talents and assets that our students bring to the campus and build on those assets so that individuals reach their full potential. It guided our thinking about how we can embrace the many forms of diversity— linguistic, cultural, racial, ethnic, and generational, among others, and create a welcoming and vibrant community.

“Although we are a citywide-serving institution, and our mission speaks of serving other communities that historically have been excluded from higher education—such as Washington Heights, East Harlem, and other parts of the Bronx, for example—without the energy, vision, and hard-work of generations of South Bronxites, Hostos would not exist.  Hostos must always be a part of change and improved quality of life in the South Bronx.”

The Strategic Plan specifies the following five goal areas: (1) Integrated Teaching and Learning Programs and Supports; (2) Campus and Community Leadership; (3) Culture of Continuous Improvement and Innovation; (4) Workforce Development for a 21st Century Economy; and (5) Institutional Infrastructure and Advancement. For each of these areas, the plan sets a five-year goal.  The plan also details 20 specific initiatives to support the achievement of each of the five goal, as well as 30 anticipated outcomes.

In the State of the College Address, President Matos Rodríguez acknowledged the valuable contributions made by the entire Hostos’ community to the formulation of the comprehensive plan: “It is with great satisfaction that I present this plan to you. I hope that we can take this landmark initiative and move towards a future we can all continue to be proud of.  This comprehensive action plan is the culmination of much dialogue and reflective input from our staff, faculty, and students, and it reaffirms our mission and sets our course for the future.  I thank all of you who played a part in bringing this ambitious plan to fruition, and hope we will continue together on this marvelous journey that is Hostos Community College.”
