Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture partners with Orchestra of St. Luke’s in presenting Valerie Coleman's Portraits of Josephine. Written for a woodwind quintet, this musical suite celebrates the life of the famed performer and social justice activist, Josephine Baker. Playwright and actor Kirya Traber joins in to weave together Coleman’s musical depictions of Baker’s origins, adventures, and legacy with her original theatrical narrative.
Valerie Coleman is an African American composer and flutist, as well as founder of the acclaimed Imani Winds. Listed as “one of the Top 35 Women Composers” by the Washington Post, Valerie Coleman is among the world's most played composers living today.
Each season, OSL travels to all five New York City boroughs introducing classical music to new audiences. Presented free of charge, the Five Borough Tour represents OSL’s longstanding commitment to offering accessible performances to the New York City community.
