Starting on July 1, 2017, Hostos Community College launched a new online bookstore for all textbooks and course materials. Selecting and ordering books is done completely online and students will have their course materials shipped to them on an individual basis.

Open/Close section Benefits of moving to an online bookstore for students
The Online Bookstore will save students money and offers an easy way to order their books in less than 5 minutes. Key features include:
  • A personalized course page showing only the courses they registered for with all corresponding course materials
  • A wide variety of low cost textbook formats including new, used, eBooks, and rentals
  • A peer-to-peer Marketplace, where students can save an average of 60% off list price
  • A price match guarantee on new books so students won't pay more if they find a lower price elsewhere (Fall 2017)
  • Listings from top selling textbook websites in the Marketplace for easy price comparisons. Students will always get the right book at the lowest price, even if they choose to shop on third-party sites.
  • Access to year-round online buyback through the bookstore's website
Open/Close section Benefits of moving to an online bookstore for faculty
The Online Bookstore will streamline the adoption process for faculty and administrators, making it easy to select and adopt course materials for class. Through the Adoption Portal, faculty can:
  • Login using their CUNYfirst credentials and see only the courses they are assigned to teach. The information that is uploaded to the bookstore will transfer back to CUNYfirst within 48 hours.
  • Search for textbooks by ISBN or book title
  • Create a custom Coursepack
  • Access a portfolio of next-generation, low-cost courseware providers through Akademos Curriculum Services
  • View previous course and departmental history and other recommendations
  • Review book details prior to adoption
  • Add ancillary materials, course notes and files
  • List real-time pricing and availability for materials

Since launching this summer, Hostos students have saved $150,000 off publisher list prices through the Hostos Online Bookstore.

Shipping Times – The transition to the online bookstore model does mean that students and faculty have to account for shipping times. Akademos and Hostos worked together to email students four weeks prior to classes starting to encourage them to view their course materials and order if possible. Akademos or student brand ambassadors representing the bookstore were available on campus at student orientations and various events as well to spread the word. Students who purchase ebooks or access codes generally receive access within a few hours of placing an order.

Occasionally, there is a delay in delivery of materials due to publisher backorders. When this happens Akademos works to alert faculty and the publishers to resolve the issue as soon as possible. It is the publisher representative's responsibility to ensure any custom materials are available prior to the start of classes and to provide temporary access to online platforms or course material if there are availability issues.

Returns – Students who need to return a book can login to their account, access the return page, or call customer service at 1-888-286-8249. Most new, used, and ebook titles are eligible for a refund, and we accommodate students as best we can who may have purchased the wrong book. Marketplace returns are typically accepted, but depend on the individual seller's policy. Akademos will help students submit a return, contact their marketplace seller, or list a book back on the marketplace to sell to another student.

It is important that faculty carefully review and submit their materials in a timely fashion to the bookstore so that students see accurate information before they purchase. If faculty are not using a book, or are not requiring on line access, it should not be listed as a course material. Faculty are responsible for ensuring correct materials are listed for their courses.

Payment Accepted – Akademos accepts credit and debit cards and financial aid vouchers such as ASAP, ACCES-VR, and the VA. Students without a credit or debit card can purchase Visa gift cards to use on the site. Akademos also has the capability to set up additional voucher programs for students who need it.

Delivery Options – Akademos and Hostos offer a ship to campus option for students who need a reliable location to receive a package. This option is available to all students during the first few weeks of each term and included in student-facing materials about the bookstore. When they check out, they can select campus delivery at the address page. Shipments are sent to Hostos for delivery in 130 C building, between 9am and 3:30 pm, M-Fr. Student brand ambassadors or Akademos representatives have been in this location since classes started to assist with orders, customer service issues, and course material pick up.
