Partners will work to create career opportunities
and improve economic outcomes for youth in the South Bronx

Phipps Neighborhoods, Montefiore Health System and Hostos Community College recently announced a $1 million grant from JPMorgan Chase to support their Career Network: Healthcare partnership in the South Bronx. The goal of the employer-driven program is to secure employment and/or education for young adults through training and career exploration geared toward a healthcare-related field.

“We’re thrilled to have the support of JPMorgan Chase in continuing to address the triple threat of poverty, high unemployment and low academic achievement that impacts the South Bronx,” said Dianne Morales, Executive Director and CEO of Phipps Neighborhoods. “Partnerships, like this one with Montefiore and Hostos, provide innovative solutions that contribute to the financial stability and overall economic well-being of our communities.”

With this funding, Phipps Neighborhoods, Montefiore Health System and Hostos Community College will offer an 11-week training program, providing career exploration and training designed to help participants establish long-term self-sufficiency. Upon completion of the program, Montefiore has guaranteed interviews to all students, who will be candidates for one or more of the Health System’s 1,500 existing vacancies.

“Montefiore is proud to work with our partners – JPMorgan, Phipps Neighborhoods and Hostos – to develop a healthcare workforce pipeline for Bronx youth,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO, Montefiore Health System. “With a workforce 23,000 strong, Montefiore is the largest employer in the Bronx. Our collective efforts will both ensure a promising future for Bronx youth and a workforce that will advance Montefiore's excellence in patient care.”

The program includes work readiness instruction and career exploration provided by Hostos and Montefiore. Career exploration classes will help participants identify their existing skills and interests while exposing them to the varied career opportunities available in healthcare.

“Through the transformative power of education, Hostos opens the door to the American Dream,” said Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Ph.D., President of Hostos Community College. “By partnering with Phipps Neighborhoods and Montefiore Health System, we are not only impacting the individuals involved in this program, but also the economy of the South Bronx and surrounding communities.”

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of work in healthcare by attending training activities and spending one week shadowing staff at Montefiore. Additionally, participants will complete a weeklong internship in the department of their choice in order to delve further into the work. On Wednesday, June 25, the Career Network: Healthcare celebrated its first class of nineteen students as they completed the 11-week program.

“By creating an employer-driven program that addresses the issue of unemployment and economic development, Phipps Neighborhoods, Montefiore and Hostos are putting an important stake in the ground,” said Gayle Jennings-O’Byrne, Vice President, JPMorgan Chase Global Philanthropy. “We are excited to support this innovative model as part of our New Skills at Work initiative.”
