Hostos Community College is famous for its spirit of “paying it forward” and giving back to the community. On May 9, 2014, several Hostos students were recognized for their exemplary commitment to this mission at the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence in Leadership Awards Ceremony held at The City College of New York. The ceremony recognized students from every CUNY campus who have displayed outstanding leadership within their respective college communities through academic and service-related activities during the 2013-2014 Academic Year.
Few Hostos students have personified leadership like Ameen Alhubaishi who was selected by CUNY’s Division of Student Affairs for his extraordinary public service and exceptional academic achievement as The City University of New York’s Student Leader of the Year.
Ameen has a 3.845 GPA and is studying Mechanical Engineering. Originally from Yemen, he has a passion for giving back to people that are in need. As a member of the Hostos Student Leadership Academy, he has completed more than 148 hours of volunteer service in the 2013-2014 school year, while working at the College’s Academic Learning Center and serving as a member of the Ernesto Malavé CUNY Corps Program.
As part of the Malavé Leadership Academy, Ameen organized a Bone Marrow Drive on the Hostos Campus and was able to collect donations from more than 80 people. Among his many achievements are: assisting in park cleanups like Franz Siegel Park with The Bronx is Blooming
