Madelin GutierrezMadelin Gutierrez was born in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic and came to the United States in November of 1990 to reunite with family that was already living in the United States. Raised and educated by her parents in the South Bronx, Madelin found herself at the top of her class and excelling in all of the subjects that she chose to study. She was so successful, with an above 90.4 average, that when she graduated from Jane Addams High School she was selected to be Salutatorian.

Madelin started her college career in 2004, studying Civil Engineering at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. After struggling through two years of culture shock and a very difficult curriculum, Madelin returned to New York to reevaluate her educational plan. After six months of working and making plans for her future, in the fall of 2008 she enrolled at Hostos Community College, so that she could attend an institution of higher learning where she did not feel so isolated. Since arriving at Hostos, Madelin has excelled in her studies. She is currently a Math major and is maintaining a 3.930 GPA and is set to graduate in spring 2010.

Madelin GutierrezMadelin was selected to be a Global Scholar in the fall of 2009 and has hopes of attending Columbia University in the fall of 2010, to study Architecture and Urban Planning.

(The Global Scholars Program is funded by grants from the United States Departments of State and Defense. It is administered through a partnership with Hostos Community College, CUNY, and Columbia University's School of General Studies (GS) and School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). The Program honors Congressman José Serrano, U.S. Representative for the 16th District of New York, who was instrumental in its conception.)

Madelin wants to work to help underdeveloped countries with their infrastructure and have an impact on society both here in the United States and around the world. As a member of the Hostos Student Leadership Academy, Madelin, as a Hostos Student Ambassador, has been a part of several coordinated community service activities to help improve the local community; which include painting murals in a local schools, collecting shoes for a Harlem Shoe Drive, and providing joy and gifts to senior citizens in Chinatown this past Christmas.

Madelin GutierrezMadelin was also the captain of a team of five students who represented Hostos Community College, the City University of New York and the entire Northeast at the 2010 Hispanic Heritage Quiz Show Competition, which will air on local networks in the fall.

Madelin is a dedicated and hard working student, who has learned the value of giving back to her community. She has a strong value system, which stems from a great upbringing and even though she has faced some adversity in her life, Madelin continues to build bridges to her future, by working to excel at everything that she does.
