Academic advisement is a crucial support that contributes toward student success. Advisement at Hostos is comprehensive and inclusive of full-time professional Advisors and Student Success Coaches. To support student academic persistence and timely graduation, Hostos advisement services are designed to help students achieve the following learning outcomes known as the Hostos Institutional Advisement Outcomes:
Navigate Hostos' administrative and academic policies and processes
Act upon wellness and academic support referrals made by advisors
Identify their self-efficacy and know when help is needed and where/how to seek it
Use communication, technological, time-management, and study skills to support academic success
Identify and connect their personal goals and strengths to their academic choices and career goals
To help students achieve these outcomes, full-time advisors and coaches assist students with selecting majors and understanding degree requirements; they assist students with exploring interests, skills, goals and objectives, and they also assist students with course withdrawals and academic standing reviews. Advisors/coaches also support students in developing plans for continuing their education after Hostos and researching career options.
Advisors/coaches refer students to college resources such as tutoring, health and wellness including counseling services, and the food pantry, as needed; the support they provide is holistic and addresses the individual needs of students at various stages of their academic careers. In addition to one-on-one support, Hostos' advisement services offer workshops and other events on topics such as time management, financial literacy, self-care and work/life/school balance.
All Hostos students are assigned an advisor/coach upon admission whether they are first year, transfer or readmit students. Advisement is not mandatory, but students are encouraged to take advantage of easily accessible services that contribute to their retention and timely completion of goals.
Advisement services are offered by three discrete units – Student Success Coaching Unit (SSCU), College Discovery (CD), and Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP). The three units are structured differently, and they work in coordination to ensure that best practices are shared and students are ensured continuous service and support if they move from one advisement unit to another.
