Civility Committee Mission Statement
The College Civility Committee (CCC) reinforces the College’s mission by promoting a campus culture where every community member is treated with dignity, empathy, and respect. It supports open communication and the free exchange of ideas while ensuring behavior never compromises safety, inclusion, or mutual respect. The CCC puts together educational programming and campus-wide events that cultivate civility, prevent bullying and harassment, and encourage all students and employees to contribute to a welcoming and supportive learning and working environment.
Behaviors that undermine a respectful campus environment include, but are not limited to:
- Bullying or harassment, which refers to any conduct reasonably perceived as malicious, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or disparaging, or likely to evoke fear of physical harm, including bias- or prejudice-motivated behavior. This includes comments, gestures, graphics, written statements, physical acts, and electronic communication or cyberbullying.
- Screaming or yelling with intent to humiliate or intimidate.
- Insubordination.
- Retaliatory actions.
Civility Principles Supported by the Committee:
- Respect for all members of the College community.
- Acceptance of differing points of view.
- Inclusiveness of the College’s diverse cultures, religions, ethnicities, languages, identities, and experiences.
- Courteous discourse and conduct in all verbal, non-verbal, and electronic communications.
