Transfer Credit Evaluation

The Office of Admissions and Recruitment provides incoming transfer students with an evaluation of transfer credits on CUNYfirst, after accepting their offer of admission.

If you want to see how credits from a course at one CUNY college will transfer to Hostos Community College, use the Evaluate my Transfer Credit feature on CUNYfirst or visit the Transfer Explorer website.

These are helpful tools when planning to transfer to a different CUNY college. Note that the evaluation you will see is considered unofficial and preliminary. After applying and being admitted, an official evaluation will be done.

Students may transfer credits earned at other accredited post secondary institutions in or outside the U.S.A., provided that:

  1. The courses were taken at institutions that are accredited by a national or regional accrediting commission recognized by CUNY, and
  2. The courses are comparable to those offered at Hostos Community College. The Transfer Credit Evaluator evaluates transfer credits prior to the first semester of enrollment, as well as upon readmission to the college.

The maximum number of credits that may be transferred is determined by a review of eligible coursework satisfactorily completed. Credits may be accepted if a grade of at least ‘C’ was obtained. However, students transferring from other CUNY Colleges may have credits transferred with an earned grade of ‘D’ or better.

Departmental Criteria
CUNY students transferring into Hostos for any allied health and/or joint programs with City College or John Jay College will not be granted transfer credit for course work completed with a “D” grade; they will be held to the same standards that Hostos students in those majors are, which require higher grades.

Transfer Credit Timelines
Students seeking entry into any program offered at Hostos must adhere to any additional departmental requirements. Also, prior college work cannot exceed timelines established by the Department Chairs and/or their designees.

Veterans Transfer Credit Assessment

  • Effective the fall 2012 admissions cycle, the Central Admissions Process will request that all veterans applying for admission submit their military education transcripts (AARTS or SMART).  The transcript will be scanned and will be accessible electronically for future use.  CUNY Admissions will provide a preliminary evaluation of transfer credit based on the ACE suggested equivalencies and will communicate this to the college.
  • For information on evaluation of military programs please refer to the guidelines on the American Council on Education website.

Readmit Students
If you are applying for readmission, courses taken after attending Hostos Community College must be evaluated. Please visit the Office of Admissions and Recruitment to submit a Readmission Application and official transcripts from all institutions attended after Hostos.

Transfer Credit Re-evaluation
Students may submit a request for re-evaluation of transfer credits to the Transfer Credit Evaluator, if they believe a re-evaluation is warranted and/or an exception should be granted regarding the awarding of transfer credits and/or issues relating to CUNY Pathways; the Transfer Credit Evaluator will then process the appeal expeditiously, including but not limited to escalating the appeal to the Academic Department Chairperson, Academic Unit Coordinator, and/or designee, etc.
