Title V Hispanic Serving Institutions Grant
Comunidad y Igualdad: An Integrated First-Year Experience and Beyond
In the spring 2023, Hostos Community College has received a $2.86 million Title V Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (DHSI) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education to increase retention, boost graduation rates, and improve student academic success.
The grant also supports to expand and enhance the college's academic offerings, program quality, and institutional stability through professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
Beginning in October 2023, the five-year grant will focus on funding various initiatives at Hostos:
- Provide an integrated and inclusive first-year experience for all Hostos students
- Provide faculty and staff with more professional development opportunities to imporve program quality and student success
- Expand the supplemental instruction offerings
Activities of Project
The Title V Grant provides Hostos the support to implement many activities that are the best strategies to support students in achieving their academic goals.
Activity 1. First Year Experience (FYE): Strengthening and expanding the First Year Experience (Details: Summer Bridge, Remote Onboarding Module, Onboarding Course, Financial Literacy, Tech Support, Peer Mentoring)
Activity 2. Professional Development (PD): Increasing professional development and other resources for faculty and staff to improve academic program quality and student success (Details: Faculty & Advising collaboration, ACUE “Effecting Teaching Practices” course, Faculty support for DEIJ course revision)
Activity 3. Supplemental Instruction (SI): Expanding Supplemental Instruction (Details: Supplemental Instruction tutors and high-impact practices embedded into more courses)
